My Moss Bear

I attended a baby shower last year for twins and spotted two moss bears there that I fell in love with and had to have one! Well, apparently they’re pretty expensive and hard to find. So what did I do? Of course, I made one. I love hosting showers and parties, so I knew I’d get lots of use out of it. Since I made it, I’ve used it three times in a matter of months! And I ALWAYS get great comments on it. I’ve had a few people interested in making one, so here is how I did mine. And of course, you could really make anything you wanted!

Supplies needed:

Chicken wire – you can find packaged chicken wire at Lowe’s in the garden center for around $10.

Green moss – I got mine at Hobby Lobby. I used 3 packages, but it just depends on the size of your animal. *Be sure to get all the same color moss. I would suggest buying one more package than you think you’ll need so the colors will match. You can always return an unopened pack. I ran out and had to go buy another pack and ended up with a green that was a little off 🙁

Hot glue gun

Wire cutters

Aluminum wire – purchase at Wal-Mart for a couple bucks

Newspaper for filling

Gloves – chicken wire hurts!

So let’s begin…

Form the shape of your animal with the chicken wire using your wire cutters and aluminum wire to secure ends. Start with the body then add the legs and work your way up. I wish I had made mine less deep. I was afraid of it not sitting up, but it would have been fine.

Before finishing the top, add some newspaper or some kind of weight to stable the body. Then continue adding the arms, head, ears and nose.

Use the aluminum wire to tie all your pieces together.

When you’re body is completely formed, begin attaching the moss using hot glue. Start in the back on the bottom. You’ll get a feel for how you’ll attach the moss, and by starting in the back, it will look nice once you get to the front.

If you can see the “seams” in the moss, use some of the moss that has fallen to cover up your imperfections. Trust me, there will be some!

And there you have it! I like to put a bib around its neck as decoration. I use a bib I’m planning on giving the mom-to-be as a gift. You could also use it to hold balloons as decoration. So many fun ideas!
